Synergetic Play Therapy for Kids, Teens, and Adults
An Interpersonal Neurobiology and Connection-Based Approach
At Calming Communities, we believe people grow and heal through safe relationships, curiosity, and connection. Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT) is a neuroscience-informed approach that supports children, teens, and adults in developing emotional awareness, regulation skills, and deeper self-understanding within a supportive therapeutic relationship.
Developed by Lisa Dion through the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute, this model blends interpersonal neurobiology, attachment science, nervous-system regulation, and the natural healing power of play.
Rather than trying to “fix” behavior, Synergetic Play Therapy focuses on understanding what the nervous system is communicating and helping individuals develop the capacity to move through big emotions in healthy, integrated ways.

Synergetic Play Therapy is grounded in several key ideas:
1. Regulation Comes Before Reasoning
When our nervous system is overwhelmed, thinking clearly becomes difficult. SPT helps individuals build awareness of their internal experiences and develop the ability to regulate emotions and body sensations.
2. The Therapist Is Part of the Process
In this approach, the therapist’s nervous system and presence are intentionally used as a tool for co-regulation. Healing happens through a shared relational experience.
3. Behavior Is Communication
Instead of focusing on stopping behaviors, Synergetic Play Therapy explores the emotional and nervous-system states underneath them.
4. Play Is a Powerful Language
Play allows experiences, emotions, and memories to be expressed in ways that words sometimes cannot.
5. Awareness Creates Choice
As individuals learn to notice what is happening inside their body and mind, they gain the ability to respond to challenges with greater flexibility and confidence.
For Children
Children naturally express themselves through play. In Synergetic Play Therapy sessions, children may use toys, art materials, movement, or imaginative play to explore their feelings and experiences.
The therapist helps the child notice what is happening inside their body and emotions while staying connected and supported. Over time, children begin to build stronger emotional regulation skills, confidence, and resilience.
Sessions often feel playful, creative, and engaging while still working deeply with the nervous system and emotional development.
For Teens
For teenagers, Synergetic Play Therapy often blends traditional conversation with expressive activities such as art, movement, metaphor, or creative exploration.
Teens learn to:
-
Notice emotional and physical signals in their body
-
Understand their nervous system responses to stress
-
Build tools for regulating anxiety, anger, or overwhelm
-
Develop stronger self-awareness and identity
The process helps teens feel more empowered in navigating relationships, school stress, and life transitions.
For Adults
Adults may also benefit from the awareness-based and nervous-system focused elements of Synergetic Play Therapy. Sessions often involve conversation, reflective exercises, body awareness, and experiential activities.
Many adults find that SPT helps them:
-
Understand long-standing emotional patterns
-
Develop regulation skills for stress and trauma responses
-
Strengthen self-compassion and emotional awareness
-
Experience deeper connection in relationships
Rather than only talking about challenges, this approach allows individuals to experience new patterns of regulation and connection in real time.

Calming Communities
If the ideas of nervous-system awareness, connection-based healing, and learning to work with emotions instead of against them resonate with you, Synergetic Play Therapy may be a helpful approach to explore.
We invite you to reflect on whether the concepts described here feel aligned with what you are hoping for in therapy. If they do, this approach may be a meaningful path toward deeper understanding, regulation, and growth.
