Sand Therapy for Kids, Teens, and Adults

Sometimes our experiences, emotions, and memories are difficult to put into words. Sand Therapy offers a gentle, creative way to explore thoughts and feelings through symbols, imagination, and sensory experience. By working with sand and small figurines, clients can create scenes that represent their inner world in a way that feels natural, expressive, and deeply meaningful.

Sand Therapy is used with children, teens, and adults. While the process may look playful on the outside, it can lead to powerful emotional insight and healing.

What Is Sand Therapy?

Sand Therapy is a therapeutic approach where clients use a tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures—people, animals, buildings, nature items, and symbolic objects—to create scenes that represent their experiences, emotions, or stories.

The sand tray becomes a safe, contained space where thoughts and feelings can be explored visually and symbolically. Instead of needing to explain everything verbally, clients can express themselves through the placement of figures, movement of sand, and the stories that emerge within the tray.

This process allows deeper emotions and experiences to be explored in a way that feels safe, creative, and empowering.

During a session, clients are invited to explore the sand tray and choose miniatures that stand out to them. There is no right or wrong way to build a scene.

Some clients carefully construct detailed worlds.

Others move sand, create landscapes, or place figures intuitively.

Sometimes a story unfolds naturally.

Other times the tray simply reflects a feeling or moment.

The therapist’s role is not to judge or interpret the scene for the client, but to provide a safe, supportive presence that encourages curiosity, reflection, and exploration. Together, the therapist and client may talk about the scene, the feelings it brings up, or simply observe what emerges over time.

Because the work is symbolic and sensory, many people find that Sand Therapy allows them to access insights and emotions that are difficult to reach through conversation alone.

Sand Therapy Session Feels Like

Sand Therapy for Children

  • For children, sand trays feel natural and engaging. Play is a child’s primary language, and Sand Therapy allows children to communicate experiences, worries, and hopes through symbolic play.

  •

  • Children may recreate events from their lives, build imaginative worlds, or express emotions that they don’t yet have the words to describe. Through the process of play and storytelling, children can explore feelings, develop emotional regulation skills, and build confidence in their ability to navigate challenges.

Teenagers often experience complex emotions while also feeling unsure how to express them. Sand Therapy offers teens a way to explore their thoughts and feelings without the pressure of having to talk about everything directly.

The creative process can help teens explore identity, relationships, stress, and life transitions in a way that feels private, reflective, and empowering.

Many teens find that building scenes in the sand helps them think through problems, understand themselves more deeply, and discover new perspectives.

Sand Therapy for Adults

Adults are often surprised by how powerful symbolic work can be. Sand Therapy provides space for adults to explore life experiences, relationships, memories, and inner conflicts in a way that bypasses the pressure to “figure everything out” through logic alone.

Creating scenes in the sand can bring forward insights, emotions, and patterns that may not surface in traditional conversation. Many adults find the process calming, grounding, and deeply reflective.

When considering therapy, one of the most important questions to ask yourself is whether the approach and the therapist feel like a good fit for you.

Some people resonate deeply with creative and symbolic approaches like Sand Therapy. Others prefer more conversation-based styles of therapy. Neither is better or worse—they are simply different ways of exploring the human experience.

As you read about Sand Therapy, consider whether the ideas behind it feel interesting, comfortable, or meaningful to you. Trust your sense of curiosity and connection. Therapy works best when the process feels aligned with your personality and the way you naturally process the world.
