AutPlay® Therapy

Neuroaffirming Therapy for Autistic and Neurodivergent Children, Teens, and Adults

At Calming Communities Counseling & Wellness, we believe that every brain develops in its own unique way. AutPlay® Therapy is a specialized approach designed to support Autistic and neurodivergent individuals through play, connection, and developmentally informed therapeutic experiences. Rather than trying to change who someone is, AutPlay focuses on helping people understand their brain, strengthen their skills, and build confidence in ways that honor their natural ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world.

AutPlay therapy blends play therapy, behavioral strategies, and relationship-based interventions into a flexible model that can support children, teens, and adults across a wide range of needs.

What Is AutPlay Therapy?

AutPlay® Therapy was developed specifically to support Autistic and neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, sensory differences, and social communication differences. The model recognizes that traditional talk therapy often doesn’t fully meet the needs of neurodivergent clients, especially younger children or individuals who communicate and process experiences in unique ways.

AutPlay integrates several evidence-informed approaches including:

  • Play therapy

  • Cognitive behavioral strategies

  • Social development support

  • Emotional regulation skills

  • Parent coaching and family collaboration

The goal is not to “fix” a person, but to support growth, understanding, regulation, and connection while respecting neurodiversity.

AutPlay sessions are interactive, creative, and individualized. Therapy often includes play, movement, art, games, storytelling, and structured activities that help clients explore emotions, build skills, and practice new ways of interacting with the world.

Depending on age and needs, sessions may focus on:

  • Emotional awareness and regulation

  • Sensory understanding and support

  • Social communication skills

  • Flexibility and problem-solving

  • Confidence and self-advocacy

  • Strengthening relationships with caregivers and peers

Therapy is guided by the client’s interests and strengths. Many clients find that sessions feel engaging, safe, and empowering, rather than pressured or corrective.

What AutPlay Therapy Looks Like

AutPlay for Children

For younger children, therapy is primarily play-based and relationship-focused. Children naturally express themselves through play, and AutPlay uses this to help them explore feelings, develop regulation skills, and strengthen communication.

Children may use toys, art materials, games, or imaginative play to practice:

  • Understanding emotions

  • Managing frustration and sensory experiences

  • Communicating needs

  • Building social understanding

  • Strengthening self-confidence

Parents are often included in the process through parent coaching, helping families learn ways to support regulation, connection, and development at home.

Adolescence can be a time when social expectations, academic demands, and identity development become more complex. AutPlay therapy with teens blends creative activities with conversation and skill building.

Sessions may focus on:

  • Emotional regulation and stress management

  • Navigating friendships and relationships

  • Self-advocacy and communication skills

  • Understanding neurodivergent identity

  • Managing school or life pressures

Many teens appreciate that therapy is collaborative and respectful, focusing on their goals and interests rather than forcing them into rigid expectations.

AutPlay for Adults

  • AutPlay principles can also support adults who are exploring their neurodivergent identity, emotional regulation, relationships, or life transitions.

  •

  • Adult sessions may include:

  •

  • Understanding sensory and emotional experiences

  • Developing regulation strategies

  • Processing past experiences

  • Navigating work, relationships, and identity

  • Building self-acceptance and confidence

  •

  • Sessions often combine discussion, experiential exercises, and creative exploration, allowing adults to discover tools that genuinely fit their lives.

Research consistently shows that most therapy approaches are similarly effective across many different mental health concerns. What tends to matter most is not the specific therapy model, but the relationship between the client and therapist—the sense of trust, safety, and connection that develops in the therapy space.

Because of this, choosing a therapy style often comes down to what feels meaningful and comfortable to you.

As you read about AutPlay therapy, you might ask yourself:

  • Do these ideas resonate with how I experience the world?

  • Does this approach feel supportive and respectful of neurodiversity?

  • Does the focus on play, creativity, and connection feel like a good fit?

If the answer feels like “yes,” AutPlay therapy may be a wonderful place to begin.

Growing Brains, Not Changing People

At Calming Communities, we believe something simple and powerful:

We aren’t building people — we’re growing brains.

Every brain develops differently. Therapy is not about forcing someone into a predetermined mold. Instead, it is about creating the right environment for growth, connection, and self-understanding.

AutPlay therapy helps nurture those environments so that children, teens, and adults can discover their strengths, build meaningful relationships, and thrive as their authentic selves.
